If you're about to install an awning outside your home, then you might already be looking at automated options if you like the idea of being able to use a remote to control the awning rather than having to do this manually.

To take things a step further, you can also install awnings that have timer controls. How do these controls work, and what are their benefits?

How Do Timer Controls Work on Awnings?

If your awning is hooked up to a timer control, then you get more automation features. The timer can control the awning's opening and closing for you. You set the times when this happens; the remote takes care of the rest.

A basic timer control gives you one opening slot and one closing slot per day. You can typically keep the same times every day or input different times for weekdays and weekends.

More advanced models may allow you to input more timed events per day; they may also give you more options. For example, some timers have automatic seasonal settings that will open an awning at sunrise and close it down at sunset. The timer adjusts automatically to pre-set these times for you.

Why Use a Timer Control?

Any kind of automation makes an awning easier to use. A timer gives you more control over how your awning works even when you aren't at home. This helps you use the awning more smartly.

So, for example, if you like to sit outdoors when you get home from work, you can set the timer to open the awning an hour or so before you get home. This will cool your patio and any windows that the awning covers.

You won't need to put the awning down yourself when you get home, so you won't have a wait until your patio is cool enough to relax in. If you set a close time for later in the evening, you won't even have to put the awning away at the end of the day.

A timer is also useful from a security perspective. If you're going to be away from home for just a couple of days or even for a longer holiday, then you can use the timer to make it look like you're at home.

If you pre-set the timer to operate the awning at random times every day, then your home looks occupied. If someone were casing you out with a view to breaking in, this activity might make them change their mind.
