Shipping containers are the obvious solution to transporting large amounts of goods, but there are many other uses to which they can be put. Here are some of the more common ways in which shipping containers are modified.

Offices

Containers can be converted into static buildings which will serve as a temporary office for building sites. How far they are customised will be up to you — they can be given insulation to make sure they are the right temperature, proper flooring, doors and windows and electrical, internet and phone connections to ensure that all your administrative tasks can be carried out. A fully converted shipping container can be indistinguishable on the inside from a permanent office.

Kitchen

Shipping containers can be fitted out with sinks, countertops, and equipment such as cookers and fridges, and equipped with electrical and plumbing connections. This could give you extra space at your home but can also be used to provide extra facilities for your business. As the kitchen will be mobile, it will be especially useful if you work on different building sites or locations. It is also very common for the container to be used as a canteen as well as a kitchen, so you can serve food to your employees or customers.

Bathroom

The container can be converted into a mobile bathroom by installing toilets, sinks and showers and by adapting it so it has the necessary plumbing and electrical connections. Again, this will provide you with extra facilities that can be moved around from site to site as necessary.

Living buildings

Shipping containers can also be converted into bedrooms or even full flats. This will be much cheaper than constructing new buildings and can have a variety of uses — as well as living accommodation, they can become garages, barns and even shops.

Workshops

Workshops are another good use of a converted shipping container, particularly for home use. If you need a space for your hobby or for carrying out odd jobs and DIY work, a shipping container can be much cheaper than building a new shed or garage and can be kitted out with all the tools and equipment you need. They can also be used for this purpose by businesses that need space for working in.

Many companies will you supply you with a container and help you convert it — just talk to them about your project.
